Irene Collins, Executive Director

Dear Friends:

The Alabama Department of Senior Services is excited to begin a new year of service to older Alabamians!

We begin 2008 with a focus on older workers and ensuring that mature Alabamians have a place at the table when it comes to workforce development and job training. ADSS is now part of the State Workforce Planning Council. In that role, we will be a strong voice for mature workers.

Alabama continues to enjoy record low unemployment making it all the more important for employers to recruit and retain valuable staff members. Our department believes that senior citizens who want to continue their careers or return to work can fill vital roles in today’s workforce.

Also, open enrollment for Medicare Advantage Plans has started and will continue until March 31. Seniors can call their local State Health Insurance Assistance Program or Senior Medicare Patrol Program toll free at 1-800-243-5463 to receive free, confidential help and assistance about Medicare Advantage Plans. Those counselors can also help with a variety of healthcare matters, including Medicare, Medicaid, long term care insurance and fraud detection and prevention.

Seniors can also call that number to receive a free Medicare Protection Toolkit. The kits give seniors tools they can use when they talk to an insurance sales person. ADSS’s Healthcare Fraud Advocacy and Outreach Council developed this toolkit in partnership with the Alabama Association for Justice. The toolkit can also be downloaded from our website at the link at the top of this page.

Finally, if you need assistance from any of our programs in 2008, please call your local Area Agency on Aging at 1-800-243-5463. Our department looks forward to serving you in 2008!

Irene B. CollinsSincerely,
Irene B. Collins
Executive Director
